Mariachi Educational Resources
Jeff Nevin has been Professor of Music and Director of Mariachi Activities at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California, since 1998. Southwestern College was the first school in the world to offer a college degree in mariachi music in 2004 (Associates Degree in Music: Mariachi Specialization), and their program has become a model for other schools in the US and Mexico who have developed their own degrees since. Dr. Nevin is also in demand as a clinician and judge for mariachi festivals across the country. He has drawn upon his experience as a lifelong mariachi musician, mariachi educator and Ph.D. in music composition to create educational materials that are used in classrooms across the US and in Mexico to teach mariachi style and repertoire.

Mariachi Mastery
The definitive mariachi method book, endorsed by Rubén Fuéntes and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, is in use by thousands of students across the country. Each of the 12 chapters in Mariachi Mastery features warm-ups, melodic and rhythmic exercises designed to teach aspects of the unique mariachi style — from rancheras to boleros, through sones and huapangos. Work with your students through this fully bilingual method and they will learn the techniques necessary to perform 80% of the mariachi repertoire. The teacher’s edition contains additional resources and information to help any music teacher (regardless of mariachi experience level) teach mariachi successfully.
Mariachi Mastery Songbook
35 songs and exercises correlating with Mariachi Mastery to help mariachi students build repertoire and become better musicians. These are some of the best known and most beloved songs from Mexico that are as much a delight to play as to listen to. Can be used with the method or as a repertoire collection for any mariachi ensemble. Includes songs for ballet folklórico, Christmas songs, instrumental songs, songs for male, female and group singing.
